I've already read the Apple article about how to install Mojave on a Mid 2010 MacBook Pro, but it isn't helpful. The article tells you to: Press and hold the Option key while choosing Apple ( ) menu System Information. In the sidebar, select Graphics/Displays. If your graphics card is compatible, you see 'Supported' next to the Metal entry. OSXDaily writes, “DosDude also produced a YouTube video demonstrating macOS Mojave on a technically unsupported older MacBook Pro 17″ model from 2009, and Mojave actually appears to run pretty. Step 1 How to install macOS Mojave on Unsupported Macs. Grab a copy of the Mojave Patch Tool at the link below: Make sure that your Mac is.

I need to investigate that a bit more. It's possible that this is a result of the hack but I had a different suspicion. The drive originally had El Capitan on it (HFS+) and I did an upgrade install rather than clean install. I think that's the reason the formatting was left untouched. I suspect that if I had done a clean insntallation the drive could have been converted to APFS.
I've got an extra day off from work coming up this weekend. I may try a clean install just for the heck of it and see what happens.
