Canvas supports the integration of external tools using the IMS LTI standard. When an external tool is launched, some student information may be passed along to the external tool provider. The standard dictates the types of information passed and how they are passed. When integrating Canvas with external tools, all efforts are made to minimize the student data transferred and to vet the security practices of the tool vendor.

Blank screen during exam A blank screen indicates that the browser has lost connectivity with your institution's server, and the webpage cannot load into the browser. In most cases, you should be able to leave your exam, shut down LockDown Browser, and restore your internet connection. We recommend restarting your computer and moving as close to the router as possible.

  • To mitigate cheating and Honor Code violations on assessments, many professors used Zoom to proctor their exams in real time, and others used the Respondus LockDown Browser to record individual students during tests. But if Emory students’ condemnatory reactions are any indication, surveillance is not the answer. Proctored assessments are.

However, with the exception of official Emory IT tools such as Office 365, most 3rd party tools are not governed by Emory University’s Information Technology office. Although it is Emory’s policy to protect student privacy, please understand that Emory does not guarantee the privacy of information shared on external 3rd party applications. DesignPLUS

DesignPLUS is a series of tools for instructors and course builders to create more robust and flexible Canvas pages. The tools are activated through a key combination while using the Rich Content Editor, and can be customized per user preference. They are designed for intermediate-to-advanced content builders, and the tools allow for a variety of structured pages, boilerplate content and theming for multiple courses.

To invoke the tool from any Rich Content Editor within Canvas, whether in pages, assignments, discussions, or the course syllabus, select ALT+SHIFT+D. The tools will pop out on the right side of the screen and can be further customized. We recommend reading the documentation thoroughly before using DesignPLUS, as the tools’ flexibility can make them challenging to adopt for those new to Canvas.

EdPuzzle EdPuzzle allows instructors to browse video lessons and embed them in their class content.
Echo ALPThe EchoCenter is a content portal used by Echo360 faculty and students to access their rich media recordings and for faculty to view usage statistics for the captured lectures.
EvaluationKITEvaluationKIT has been implemented by several Emory schools to provide online course evaluations and reporting.
i>ClickerAn iClicker is a radio frequency device that allows a student to anonymously respond to questions your instructor poses in class. This lets you and your instructor quickly know how well you understand the lesson material.
IllumideskIllumiDesk allow professors, teaching professionals, and learners to quickly access Jupyter Notebooks, directly from Canvas. IllumiDesk also offers features which expedite administrative tasks, such as auto graders, module and assignment definition, among others.
Respondus LockDown BrowserRespondus LockDown Browser® is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment within the LMS. When students use LockDown Browser they are unable to print, copy, go to another URL, or access other applications. When an assessment is started, students are locked into it until they submit it for grading. Respondus Monitor proctoring functionality has been added to the LockDown Browser as a pilot for the 2020-21 school year.
Macmillan Higher Education

Macmillan Higher Education offers deep content integration between its LaunchPad products and Canvas. This robust integration creates direct links from a Canvas course into the Macmillan LaunchPad environment.

This integration allows students and instructors to use, create, share, and collaborate on Office 365 files from their Emory accounts within Canvas.

TidyUP

TidyUP is a simple tool for Canvas that allows instructors to run content reports on their courses to find material which isn’t being used, like extra files, folders, pages or assignments that aren’t linked. Once the course is scanned, redundant or unused content is presented and can be viewed, exported and/or deleted to keep the course structure tidy.

To add the tool to a course, go to Settings / Navigation, and move the TidyUP menu option from the hidden tools area to the active navigation elements area and save. Students will not see this navigation element. Then simply click the TidyUP link, choose which areas to scan and follow the prompts.

TurningPointTurning Technologies’ easy-to-use solutions enable you to ask questions and gather feedback in real-time while providing valuable data to monitor and measure learning progress.
TurnitinTurnitin is an online plagiarism checker that is fully integrated into Canvas. Setting up an assignment that uses Turnitin to test for originality is simple and straightforward.

Twitter is an online social networking service that enables users to send and read short messages. Registered users can read and post tweets, but those who are unregistered can only read them.

UDOIT Accessibility Checker

UDOIT provides course builders advice and suggestions on how to correct accessibility problems. To add the tool to a course, go to Settings / Navigation, and move the Accessibility Check menu option from the hidden tools area to the active navigation elements area and save. Students will not see this navigation element. Then simply click the Accessibility Check link, choose which areas to scan and follow the prompts.

VoiceThread bridges the gap between real-time discussions and standard video lectures or online presentations.
The WebAssign integration allows students to access WebAssign assignments through Canvas.
YouTube

Search publicly available YouTube videos. A new icon will show up in your course rich editor letting you search YouTube and click to embed videos in your course material.

Dr. Jacobe has spent two decades as a faculty member and administrator in higher education and, before coming to Moravian, served most recently as Director of the Center for American Language & Culture and Affiliate Faculty in the Department of English at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ). She has extensive experience in academic support and advising, curricular design and revision, faculty development, accreditation and reaccreditation activities, and strategic planning in higher education. The author of dozens of essays and book chapters, she is the author, most recently of Final Draft 4, a bridging level writing textbook for English language learners from Cambridge University Press. Her research and writing interests include higher education and academic labor, humanities education, the scholarship of teaching and learning, and 20th-century and contemporary literature, particularly of the American South. She is currently at work on a scholarly book that examines the evolution of articulated regional identity in novels by Southern writers working across the 20th and 21st centuries. Dr. Jacobe holds a Ph.D. in English Language & Literature from The Catholic University of America, an MFA in Creative Writing from The American University, and a BA in English and Mass Communication from Emory & Henry College.

Before coming to Moravian University, Matthew Werkheiser was an instructor of First-Year Writing at Lehigh University and a Professional Tutor in their Writing and Math Center. His graduate research focused primarily on critical theory and writing pedagogy in the classroom with an emphasis on the ethics of teaching writing to various student populations. As an instructor and tutor, Matthew has experience ensuring that students receive the assistance they need and are well equipped to succeed in an academic setting. He received his Masters and Bachelors in English from Lehigh University.
